Belief

With the WGII Summary for Policy Makers ready to be published on Monday, Eli provides a taxonomy of denial, or if the bunnies wish of belief, flow chart.  There has been considerable progress since the AR4, we have made progress with the basic opposition now coming from those who deny that there will be serious impacts of climate change.

Just to set the record straight, Bob Marley did not write that song and never sang that song. Bob Marley died in 1981 before the song was written in 1988 by Bobby McFerrin.

Knew about McFarrin, but found this on youTube, oh well a day for mistakes.

Two categories are conspicuously absent : those who question the serial and occasionally hysterical invocation of the Precautionary principal, and the barking mad.

Maybe you were thinking of Marley's "Three Little Birds" which contains the lines "Don't worry about a thing, cause every little thing gonna be alright"

There is another group- And that is the reticent scientists. How long did it take the folks at RealClimate to admit that the 2007 Arctic Sea Ice Melt Event was real. In 2009, they were still saying that it was just natural variability and that the sea ice would refreeze - soon. They reported climate model runs that showed the sea ice would refreeze real soon.

In 2009,the folks at RC still considered me an "alarmist" for thinking/saying that we had crossed a tipping point and sea ice was going.

Such reticent science still dominates IPCC reports. Such reticent science understates the most likely impacts and effects, and causes risk managers and policy makers to underestimate risks and fail to act appropriately.

Reticent science says, "these are the leopards that we can clearly see with a 95% certainty". If we are to survive, we need to beware of the leopards that are only a movement in the grass and which have not been seen with 95% certainty. A society with reticent watchmen will go extinct.

A black diamond should be added to accomodate those obsessed with past catastrophes, real and imagined.

Having skipped the permission, I am now asking forgiveness, as I have borrowed (with attribution) your nice flow chart..

You may find Bobby McFerrin's original video of the tune at Vevo. His locks are longer and grayer, now; still love this song, just for the vocal, wholly apart from the lyrics:

And the YouTube version of the VEVO version . . .

So will a society that sees Jesus on a dog's butt, Aaron.

You may be all butt-hurt because you were dissed on RC, but this isn't about you, and "reticent scientists" as you define them aren't the problem. The dangers we can be 95% certain of should be plenty scary, and plenty of sober scientists are speaking up about them. The real problem is that 95% isn't certain enough for people who won't accept reality when it's swirling about their knees.
